A 14-year-old boy from Kerala has succumbed to amoebic meningoencephalitis. It is a rare brain disease caused by a free-living amoeba found in contaminated water. The tragic incident took place when he bathed in a pond that was reportedly contaminated in Kozhikode. This unfortunate event marks the third fatality in the state due to the infection in the past three months.Rare brain eating bacteria in KeralaMridul was admitted to a private hospital on June 24 after contracting the infection. Despite receiving medical care, he tragically passed away on Thursday.Earlier, two other deaths were recorded. A five-year-old girl from Malappuram in May and a 13-year-old girl from Kannur died in June.What is Amoebic Meningoencephalitis Amoebic meningoencephalitis is a rare disease. Nearly always fatal brain infection is caused by the free-living single-celled organism Naegleria fowleri.This amoeba is also known as the “brain-eating amoeba”. It typically infects individuals through contaminated freshwater. It enters the body through the nose and then migrates to the brain, where it consumes nerve tissue and triggers inflammation. It is crucial to emphasize that this disease is not transmissible among humans.Amoebic Meningoencephalitis symptoms The initial signs of the infection consist of symptoms like headache, fever, nausea, and vomiting. As the disease progresses, additional symptoms may appear, such as a stiff neck, confusion, seizures, hallucinations, coma, and a lack of attention to people and surroundings.
