The UN HIV report released on Monday revealed that approximately 40 million people have been infected with the HIV virus. Now HIV is leading to AIDS, with over 9 million of them not receiving any treatment. Decreased funding, and a rise in new infections in specific regions like the Middle East and North Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and Latin America are the major issues. In 2023, the number of deaths from AIDS-related illnesses was approximately 630,000. It is a significant decrease from the 2.1 million deaths reported in 2004. The most recent data shows that the number is more than twice the goal set for 2025. It aimed for fewer than 250,000 deaths, as reported by UNAIDS. It is the leading UN agency in the global fight to eradicate the pandemic. Furthermore, the report indicated that the percentage of new infections among marginalized communities worldwide, such as sex workers, men who have sex with men, and individuals who inject drugs, has risen to 55% in 2023 from 45% in 2010, reflecting an increase in stigma and discrimination.
