Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro secured a third consecutive term by obtaining 51 percent of the vote, as confirmed by the country’s electoral authority shortly after midnight on Monday, with 80 percent of ballot boxes already counted. Nicolas Maduro is the president of Venezuela Despite various exit polls predicting an opposition victory, the official announcement revealed otherwise. The electoral authority reported that opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez received 44 percent of the vote. It is contradicting earlier statements from the opposition claiming they had grounds for celebration. He urged their supporters to remain vigilant during the vote counting process. Gonzalez stated on X around 11 p.m. local time that the results, which cannot be concealed, reflect the peaceful choice made by the country. Prior to the announcement of the results, opposition leader Maria Corina Machado urged the Venezuelan military to respect the outcome of the vote. She emphasized that the people of Venezuela have clearly expressed their rejection of Maduro. Machado called on the military to align themselves with the will of the people and seize the opportunity to stand on the right side of history. Despite these calls, there is no indication of any public dissent among the military leaders, who have consistently supported Maduro, a former bus driver and foreign minister aged 61.
