After the Reuters report confirmed the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh. He is a prominent Hamas leader, in Tehran. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran released a statement on the incident.

He was 62 years old. He was born in a refugee camp in close proximity to Gaza City. He became a member of Hamas in the latter part of the 1980s. Ismail rapidly ascended the ranks to become a trusted confidant of Hamas’s founder and spiritual leader, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin. During the 1980s and 1990s, Haniyeh was incarcerated multiple times in Israeli penitentiaries. Following Hamas’s victory in the 2006 parliamentary election, he assumed the role of Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority government. However, his tenure was brief, as he was relieved of his duties by President Mahmoud Abbas in 2007.A decade later, in 2017, he was elected as the leader of Hamas’s political faction. That same year, Haniyeh was designated as a “specially designated global terrorist” by the United States.

Hamas is currently in conflict with Israel in Gaza. He was attributed Haniyeh’s death to an “Israeli” raid on his residence in Tehran. Hamas condemned the killing of Haniyeh as a result of “a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran”.In response to the assassination, an emergency session of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council is being held at the residence of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This meeting is reported by US media citing Iranian officials. He is convened under exceptional circumstances.
