On Tuesday, August 27, the ICC elected Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), without a challenge. When Shah files his nomination on the deadline day, he would become the 35-year-old leader of the world cricket governing body.
Jay Shah is the new chairman of ICC
He will take over for Greg Barclay, who took up the position in 2020 but decided not to run for a third term. Shah will assume the role of ICC chair with effect from December 1, 2024. The ICC declared earlier this month that elections for the chairmanship would only take place in the event that many candidates were nominated. It was verified on Tuesday that Shah was the only candidate for the top job. In order to make cricket a genuinely global sport, the secretary of the BCCI, who also serves as the head of the Asian Cricket Council, talked about the necessity of adopting new perspectives. Since his early days at the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA), Jay Shah has quickly progressed through the ranks of cricket management. Shah’s adventure started in 2009 when he was elected to the Central Board of Cricket, Ahmedabad, executive board. He was named joint secretary of the GCA in September 2013, and while there, he was instrumental in the construction of Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi venue, which is now the biggest cricket venue in the world. Shah’s ascent through the administrative echelons of Indian cricket was made possible by his achievements at the GCA.
