The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has levied a penalty of Rs 1.2 lakh on students involved in the production of the play ‘Raahovan’ during the institute’s annual performing arts festival. IIT Bombay Raahovan controversy
The play was loosely inspired by the Indian epic ‘Ramayana’. It faced severe criticism on social media for its disrespectful portrayal of Lord Ram and Hindu culture. In addition to the fine, which amounts to almost a semester’s tuition at the prestigious institution, the graduating students will not be eligible for any gymkhana awards. Furthermore, their juniors have been fined Rs 40,000 each and barred from using hostel facilities. The controversial play, staged on March 31, featured students from various departments and academic years. Numerous videos of the performance circulated widely on social media, depicting the audience reacting negatively to a scene involving the characters of Sita and Lakshman. The allegations against ‘Raahovan’ included portraying the lead characters negatively and disrespecting Hindu culture and religious beliefs. Consequently, a disciplinary committee was formed by the institute. The students involved in the play were present during the committee meeting.
After careful consideration, the committee decided to impose fines and other disciplinary measures.
Supporters of the students argued that the play offered a feminist perspective on a tribal community and was well-received by the audience.
IIT Bombay has chosen not to provide any comments regarding the disciplinary actions taken against the students. In April, a group of Indian hackers reportedly hacked the website of Centre-run Pondicherry University. It cited disrespect towards Ramayana and Lord Ram during a campus play. They claimed responsibility for disrupting the website through a suspected DDoS attack. They threatened to delete the institution’s page from Wikipedia.
