Bhartruhari Mahtab is a seven-term Lok Sabha member. He has been appointed as the pro tem Speaker of the Lower House. The announcement was made by Kiren Rijiju, the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs. Bhartruhari Mahtab, the new Lok sabha speakerAs the pro tem Speaker, Mahtab will preside over the initial meeting of the Lower House after the general elections. Additionally, he will oversee the session in which the Speaker and Deputy Speaker are elected, especially if it is a newly formed House. Mahtab’s selection for this position is attributed to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) remarkable performance in Odisha during the elections. Previously associated with the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) led by Naveen Patnaik, Mahtab is the son of former Odisha Chief Minister Harekrushna Mahtab. He switched to the BJP prior to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In March, the 66-year-old leader announced his departure from the BJD. He cited a decline in party activity in recent months. Subsequently, Mahtab joined the BJP. Having served as a Member of Parliament for seven terms, Mahtab has been representing the Cuttack Lok Sabha constituency since 1998.
