He was referred to as ‘The Scorpion’. Majeed and his group of traffickers facilitated the illegal transportation of approximately 10,000 migrants through boats and trucks across the English Channel. The BBC conducted an inquiry to find the fugitive smuggler. BBC ultimately traced him to Sulaymaniyah city in Iraq. The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) expressed gratitude to the BBC for shedding light on the case and reiterated their unwavering commitment to disrupting and dismantling criminal networks engaged in human trafficking to the UK, regardless of their location. Kurdish security forces detained Majeed on May 12, as confirmed by the NCA. He was resided in Nottingham previously. Majeed became the subject of an NCA wanted appeal in November 2022 after being convicted of people smuggling charges in absentia in Belgium. It was made possible by a collaborative investigation between the UK and Belgium, as stated by the Agency on Twitter. Between 2016 and 2021, Majeed’s criminal organization was believed to have exerted significant control over the illicit trade of people-smuggling between Europe and the UK.

Following a comprehensive two-year international police operation, a total of twenty-six members of Majeed’s gang were apprehended and subsequently convicted in courts located in the UK, France, and Belgium. However, Majeed himself managed to elude capture and remained a fugitive from justice. Eventually, he was tried in absentia at a court in Belgium, where he was found guilty of 121 counts related to people-smuggling.In October 2022, Majeed received a sentence of ten years imprisonment and was also ordered to pay a fine of 968,000 euros.Recently, the BBC managed to locate Majeed, who agreed to a meeting at a mall in Sulaymaniyah. During this encounter, he asserted that he was not the leader of the gang.
