The government has taken action on OTT platforms. Government blocked 18 OTT platforms. Reason of banning of 18 OTT platforms Government said that these OTT platforms have the presence of obscene and pornographic content. Official statement of government.The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) stated that they have received multiple warnings from the government also. Additionally, nineteen websites, 10 apps (7 on Google Play Store, 3 on Apple App Store), and 57 social media accounts linked to these platforms have been deactivated. This decision was made even after the platforms were cautioned against promoting obscenity, vulgarity, and abuse under the guise of “creative expression”.The move was executed in accordance with the regulations. The government stated that a large portion of the content on the platforms showed women in a disrespectful way.It showed nudity and sexual activities in inappropriate situations. These sexual activities are shown in the relationships between teachers and students, and family relationships.
The content also had sexual references. These are sometimes long parts of pornographic scenes without any meaningful or societal value.
The government explained that this was why they decided to block the platforms. One of the OTT apps had more than 10 million downloads. Two others had over 5 million downloads.Additionally, the social media accounts of the OTT platforms had a total of over 3.2 million followers.The government mentioned that these platforms used social media a lot to share trailers and specific scenes. These scenes and trailers link to attract people to their websites and apps.
