A distressing incident involving an 82-year-old patient allegedly being struck repeatedly by a surgeon during treatment has sparked an investigation by Chinese authorities. The shocking event occurred in 2019 at an ophthalmic hospital under Aier China in Guigang, Southern China, as reported by BBC. A recently surfaced viral video on Weibo showcased the unsettling incident.
The surgeon involved was promptly suspended following the video’s circulation, indicating swift action taken by the hospital. Reports suggest the patient, under local anesthesia, exhibited difficulty during surgery, moving her head and eyes. Language barriers compounded the situation as she couldn’t comprehend the doctor’s Mandarin instructions due to speaking a local dialect.
Local authorities confirmed the patient suffered bruises on her forehead during the ordeal. The hospital, acknowledging the incident, issued an apology post-surgery and offered a compensation of 500 yuan (about ₹5,800) to the patient’s family. Regrettably, the patient’s son mentioned his mother’s loss of vision in her left eye, although it remains uncertain if the incident directly caused this impairment.
