The report states that in 2022, there were approximately 46 million foreign-born people living in the United States. It is about 14 percent of the total population of 333 million. Out of these, around 24.5 million, or 53 percent, identified themselves as naturalized citizens. But don’t worry, things are getting better! Since the fiscal year 2020, the agency has reduced the number of applications waiting to be completed by more than half.
By the end of the fiscal year 2023, there were about 408,000 naturalization applications still pending.
This is a big improvement compared to the end of fiscal year 2022 when there were 550,000 pending applications. And it’s even better than the end of fiscal year 2021 when there were 840,000 pending applications. The highest number of pending applications was at the end of fiscal year 2020 with 943,000. In fiscal year 2023 there are a total of 823,702 lawful permanent residents (LPRs) applied for naturalization. But this number is still lower than the estimated 9 million LPRs. These were eligible to become citizens in 2023. The percentage of foreign-born individuals become naturalized citizens. It varies depending on where they come from. People from countries like Honduras, Guatemala, Venezuela, Mexico, El Salvador, and Brazil have the lowest percentages of naturalized citizens. On the other hand, people from countries like Vietnam, the Philippines, Russia, Jamaica, and Pakistan have the highest percentages of naturalized citizens.
INA rule of US To become eligible for naturalization, an applicant must meet certain requirements outlined in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).
