Hema committee report: With the gorgeous moon and sparkling stars, the sky is full of mystery. However, a scientific examination found that neither the moon nor the stars sparkled. These were the majestic opening words of the much-awaited Hema Committee report. This report exposed the murky side of the Malayalam film business.
Hema committee report
The study was released on August 19 five years after it was given to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. It contains shocking information on the pervasive sexual harassment that women in the film business endure, along with instances of exploitation, misuse of authority, and lobbying.
How does it all started?
A well-known Malayalam performer was allegedly attacked in a moving automobile in February 2017. After filming the attack, five men abducted her and left her alone. Later on, the actor complained to the police. Investigating further, it was discovered that powerful Malayalam star Dileep had allegedly plotted with other men to “teach her a lesson”. The actor is presently on trial for assault. A number of the witnesses have become antagonistic over time. A few years later, actor Dileep was allegedly in possession of the assault’s images before the magistrate’s court where the director Balachandra Kumar made the startling claim. His claims caused the case to take a different turn.
Origin of Hema committee
The Hema Committee is made up of Justice Hema, actor Sarada, and bureaucrat KB Valsala Kumari. They started working in November 2017. In a statement, they invited women to speak up and assured readers that their privacy would be respected. In front of Justice Hema, more than eighty women testified about the unfriendly atmosphere in which the Malayalam film business functions. The committee sent Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan a 296-page report in 2019. Nevertheless, the report sat on the shelves for five years. The government faced criticism for remaining silent and choosing not to provide the findings to the general public.
