Apple is gearing up to release the iPhone 16 series in early September 2024, with reports suggesting that all models will come equipped with the A18 chip. This move would standardize the chip across the entire lineup, including the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. iPhone 16 specifications: Alvarez’s report indicates that the model numbers found in the backend. It is specifically iPhone17,1 through iPhone17,5, point to the use of the A18 chip across all devices. Apple has a history of linking iPhone identifiers to the chips they use, such as the A16 Bionic chip in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, identified as iPhone15,4 and iPhone15,5. The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max have the A17 Bionic chip. These are identified as iPhone16,1 and iPhone16,2. Despite the expected consistency in the chip, Apple is still likely to distinguish between the standard and Pro models. One potential difference could be in the performance, possibly by adjusting the number of GPU cores in the chips. For instance, the A18 chips in the non-Pro models might have fewer GPU cores compared to the A18 Pro chips in the Pro models.Another possibility mentioned is that the A17 chip might be rebranded as the A18 after undergoing a new manufacturing process at TSMC. This would allow Apple to present the A17’s design as a new generation while introducing a new A18 Pro chip with improved graphics and AI capabilities for the Pro models. The iPhone 16 series might switch from physical buttons to touch-sensitive ones using Apple’s Taptic Engine. It mimics real button presses with haptic feedback. The camera design is getting a makeover too, with standard models getting a vertical camera setup and new Capture and Action buttons. There are rumors about display upgrades, like larger screens and thinner bezels for the Pro models, and a possible jump to a 120Hz refresh rate for the standard models. Battery life is expected to improve with larger batteries for longer usage times. The Pro models could also get major camera improvements, such as a super telephoto periscope camera, a 48-megapixel Ultra Wide lens, and new anti-reflective optical coating for better image quality.
