Prior to this, he was the Union Minister of State for Steel, Mines, Coal, and Agriculture from 1985-86 in the cabinet of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Following that, he served as Minister of State in the External Affairs Ministry from 1986 to 1989, again under the Rajiv Gandhi administration. This marked his initial term as a Member of Parliament. He has been elected from Bharatpur in the 1984 elections. It was at this juncture that he transitioned from the Indian Foreign Services to a political career. Having joined the Indian Foreign Service at the age of 22 in 1953, Singh began a notable diplomatic journey. He served as India’s Deputy High Commissioner to the United Kingdom from 1973 to 1977, and then took on the role of High Commissioner to Zambia in 1977.
