There’s been a nasty outbreak of parrot fever in Europe.A few countries like Austria, Denmark, Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands have all seen more cases of this psittacosis infection than usual.In fact, the WHO said there have even been five deaths because of it.According to the reports, there have been more and more cases since late 2023, with it spiking in November and December. And it makes sense – the infection usually spreads when people come in contact with sick birds.
What is Parrot Fever
Parrot fever is a lung infection you can get from birds. Parrot fever is caused by Chlamydophila psittaci. This virus is often found in pets like parrots but also poultry and wild birds.Most people get it from being around sick birds a lot, like pet store workers, vets, farmers and gardeners where infected birds live.
Parrot fever symptoms
Psittacosis causes fever, chills, headache, and muscle aches. It also causes a dry cough.Most people start feeling sick within 2 weeks of being exposed to the bacteria.
Parrot Fever treatments
Since, it is a new disease with low risk assessment so there is no vaccine currently. Antibiotics work really well if you take them early. This prevents complications like pneumonia.If you do get treated with antibiotics, psittacosis almost never causes death. Some people did get pneumonia or need to go to the hospital. But it’s pretty rare for it to pass between humans.As long as the doctor diagnoses it right and gives antibiotics, they can handle the disease.
