Over 1,300 individuals lost their lives during this year’s Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia due to the scorching temperatures at Islamic holy sites. Saudi Health Minister Fahd bin Abdurrahman Al-Jalajel revealed that 83% of the 1,301 deaths were unauthorized pilgrims who endured long walks in the extreme heat to participate in the rituals near Mecca. He mentioned that the identification process faced a delay due to the absence of identification documents for many of the deceased pilgrims. The dead were laid to rest in Mecca, but no specific details were provided. Among the casualties were over 660 Egyptians. Only 31 of them were authorized pilgrims, as per two officials in Cairo. Egypt canceled the licenses of traveling agencies. Egyptian authorities have canceled the licenses of 16 travel agencies that facilitated the travel of unauthorized pilgrims to Saudi Arabia. The officials stated that most of the deceased were located at the Emergency Complex in Mecca’s Al-Muaisem neighborhood. Egypt sent over 50,000 authorized pilgrims to Saudi Arabia this year.
