Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened up the Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh yesterday.
Sela Tunnel length
This tunnel is located really high up at 13,000 feet! It’s also apparently the longest “twin-lane” tunnel in the world. The Sela Tunnel will now allow people to get to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh no matter what the weather is like. After opening it, Modi gave a little speech. He was like “You’ve probably heard me talk about my ‘Modi Guarantee’. You’ll understand it better after visiting Arunachal. The whole Northeast has seen it in action.” He was referring to laying the foundation for the Sela Tunnel back in 2019 and now seeing it finished. Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation for this project back in February 2019. But it took longer than expected to finish because of the pandemic.
Sela Tunnel cost
It cost about 825 crore rupees to build. There are two tunnels as part of the project. Plus over 8 kilometers of new roads connecting it all. In total it’s around 12 kilometers long. The first tunnel is just under a kilometer at 980 meters. The second tunnel is an emergency exit route measuring 1.5 kilometers. It’s located near the Line of Actual Control with China. The Sela Tunnel is really important strategically. It gives access all year round to Tawang and other areas on the border with China.
