Sofia Firdous is a member of the Congress party. She made history by becoming the first Muslim woman to be elected as an MLA in Odisha. She is 32 years old. She won against BJP’s Purna Chandra Mahapatra by a margin of 8,001 votes in the Barabati-Cuttack constituency, with Biju Janata Dal (BJD)’s Prakash Chandra Behra finishing in third place. Sofia Firdous is the daughter of senior Congress leader Mohammed Moquim. He previously held the MLA position for the same seat until he was disqualified due to a corruption conviction. Subsequently, the Congress party chose to nominate Firdous as their candidate for the seat.
Sofia Firdous qualification Sofia Firdous holds a degree in Civil Engineering from Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology at KIIT University in Bhubaneswar. Additionally, she completed an Executive General Management program at Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIM-B) in 2022. Prior to entering politics, Firdous served as a director at her father’s company, Metro Builders. She is also affiliated with the Bhubaneswar branch of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (Credai). As per the election affidavit submitted to the Election Commission, Firdous has no criminal charges against her. Her total assets amount to approximately Rs 5 crore, with liabilities of nearly Rs 28 lakhs.
