The Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill 2024: Bengaluru will divide into 5 zones

The Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill, 2024 was approved by the Karnataka Cabinet on Monday. This bill proposes the division of the capital city into five zones in order to restructure the civic administration. The Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill 2024 Sources have indicated that the bill is expected to be presented in the state Assembly during the upcoming Monsoon Session, commencing on Tuesday. The bill introduces the establishment of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA). It is a new governing body with enhanced planning and financial powers. It also delineates the formation of five zones under the GBA, each to be overseen by a three-tier system consisting of the Chief Minister, municipal corporations, and ward committees. Experts believe that this legislative proposal is aimed at enhancing governance throughout the Greater Bengaluru Area by implementing a more organized and effective framework. The Chief Minister and the Minister of Bengaluru Development will oversee the complete organization.  However, the opposition BJP perceives the current administrative framework as a result of their previous governance. The debate surrounding this new legislation evokes memories of past efforts to reform Bengaluru’s governance. During Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s previous administration, there was a proposal to divide the Bengaluru municipal body into three separate entities.
