Thorpe had a distinguished career representing England in 100 Test matches and 82 One Day Internationals. He amassed a total of 6,744 runs in Test cricket with 16 centuries. He has an impressive batting average of 44.66. The ECB released a statement on their official website to announce Thorpe’s death on the same day.Graham Thorpe commenced his first-class career with Surrey during the summer of 1988 and established himself as a regular player in the following season of 1989. His England debut took place in 1993 when he was 24 years old. He showcased an impressive performance by scoring 114 runs against Australia at Trent Bridge.Thorpe emerged as a pivotal player in England’s middle order, with his remarkable unbeaten double-century against New Zealand in Christchurch in 2002 being a standout moment in his career. This innings was characterized by 28 fours and four sixes.Despite experiencing sporadic appearances during his international career, Thorpe retired from playing for England in 2005. He then transitioned into coaching. He started in Australia where he provided guidance to players such as Steve Smith and David Warner at New South Wales. Subsequently, he took on the role of batting coach at the England and Wales Cricket Board.In March 2022, Thorpe was named as the head coach of Afghanistan’s cricket team, but he was unable to assume the position due to health issues.
