WhatsApp recently shared some important information about their actions and rules. They mentioned that they follow certain guidelines. These guidelines are called the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. These rules help them handle user complaints. Company maintains digital media ethics with the help of these rules.

WhatsApp also provided some numbers to show their efforts. From March 1 to 31 this year, they took action against 7.9 million accounts. In a report from January 2024, they mentioned that they had already banned 69 million accounts by November 31 of the previous year.In January 2023, WhatsApp said “bye-bye” to 2.9 million accounts. Then in February, they banned 4.5 million more accounts. March saw 4.7 million accounts get the boot, followed by 7.4 million in April, 6.5 million in May, 6.6 million in June, 7.2 million in July, 7.4 million in August, 7.1 million in September, 7.5 million in October, and 7.1 million in November.

Now, with the new report coming out for December, it’s expected that the number will go way past 70 million. WhatsApp also mentioned that they took action before users even reported over 20 million of these accounts.Between January and November of last year, WhatsApp got more than 79,000 complaints from users. These complaints were about things like account help, getting unbanned, other kinds of help, problems with the product, and safety worries. In response, WhatsApp did something about 2,398 accounts.WhatsApp explained, “When we say ‘Accounts Actioned,’ it means we did something about the complaint. Taking action could mean banning an account or bringing back a previously banned account because of the complaint.”
